Choosing between AWS's Sydney region and Azure Australia East isn't just a pricing decision — it affects data residency, compliance posture, and migration complexity. A practical checklist for Australian businesses planning a cloud move in 2026.
Every Australian business planning a cloud migration eventually hits the same fork in the road: AWS's Sydney (ap-southeast-2) region, or Microsoft Azure's Australia East (New South Wales) and Australia Southeast (Victoria) regions. Both are mature, both keep data within Australian borders, and both are backed by IRAP-assessed services suitable for government and regulated workloads. The right answer depends less on brand preference and more on your existing stack, compliance obligations, and team skills.
Both AWS Sydney and Azure Australia East offer in-country data storage and processing, and both have services assessed under the Infosec Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) at PROTECTED level, which matters if you're selling to Australian government or handling data under frameworks that reference IRAP. Neither platform automatically makes you compliant with the Privacy Act, APRA CPS 234, or any other framework — you still need to configure services correctly, and residency alone doesn't satisfy every obligation under APP 8 if you use global services or support functions outside Australia.
List pricing between AWS Sydney and Azure Australia East is close enough that it rarely decides the migration on its own. The bigger cost drivers are egress pricing for data leaving the region, reserved instance/savings plan structures, and — critically — whether your organisation already has negotiated Microsoft Enterprise Agreement credits that make Azure effectively discounted before you've compared a single instance price.
AWS's breadth of managed services, maturity of its container and Kubernetes tooling (EKS), and the sheer size of its partner and talent ecosystem in Australia make it a strong default for cloud-native and startup workloads, particularly where the team is building new, not just migrating old.
Azure's tight integration with Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Active Directory / Entra ID makes it the pragmatic choice for enterprises whose identity, ERP, and productivity stack is already Microsoft-centric — migrating there often means fewer new integration points, not more.
“Most 'AWS vs Azure' debates in Australia are really a proxy for a different question: what does your existing stack, your team's skills, and your compliance obligations already point towards? Get that answer right and the platform choice becomes obvious.”
